Security token tax calculator (Spanish IRPF)

Estimate the Spanish personal income tax (IRPF) on your security token income under the savings tax base: capital gains from a sale or investment income. A quick estimate before talking to our team.

This calculator estimates the Spanish personal income tax of an individual who is a tax resident in Spain. If the token is held by a company it pays corporate income tax, at a flat rate and outside the savings scale; if the holder is not resident in Spain, non-resident income tax applies. In those two cases the result below does not apply (Law 35/2006, BOE-A-2006-20764; Law 27/2014, BOE-A-2014-12328).

Type of income

Both are taxed under the IRPF savings tax base, with the same progressive scale.

Profit obtained from selling the security token during the tax year.

Total of your other savings income for the tax year (other dividends, interest, gains…). It is used as a prior base so the brackets are applied correctly. Defaults to 0.

Spain capital gains tax on security tokens: how the calculator works out your IRPF

If you are an individual resident in Spain for tax purposes, outside the Basque Country and Navarre, which have their own foral income tax rules (Art. 4.2 of the IRPF Law), income from a security token is taxed in the savings base of Spanish personal income tax (IRPF), at rates from 19% to 30% in force since 2025. The calculator applies that scale bracket by bracket to your gain or your investment income and returns the estimated tax, the average effective rate and a breakdown. For example, for a €10,000 gain with no other savings income it estimates €1,980 of tax (19.8%).

How it calculates

  • Type of income. A capital gain from selling the token (transfer value minus acquisition value, Art. 34.1.a of the IRPF Law) or investment income: dividends, coupons or interest (Art. 25.1 and 25.2). Both generally go to the savings base (Art. 46).
  • Amount and other savings income. If you enter other savings income for the year, the tool uses it as a prior base and stacks your income on top, so it may start in a higher bracket. With €45,000 already in the base, it would estimate €2,200 for the same €10,000 (22%).
  • Scale. It adds up the state and regional scales in Arts. 66 and 76 of the IRPF Law, as worded by Law 7/2024: 19% up to €6,000; 21% up to €50,000; 23% up to €200,000; 27% up to €300,000; and 30% above that.
  • Losses. If you tick a capital loss or negative investment income, the tax is zero and the tool explains the Art. 49 offset: first against income of the same kind, then up to 25% of the positive balance of the other block, and any remainder over the next four years.

What it leaves out

It is for guidance only and is not tax advice. It only works for resident individuals, who are the taxpayers under IRPF (Art. 8.1 of the IRPF Law), and not for residents of the Basque Country or Navarre, which have their own foral rules (Art. 4.2); a company pays Spanish corporate income tax (Law 27/2014) and a non-resident pays non-resident income tax (Royal Legislative Decree 5/2004). It does not deduct withholding already applied, apply the personal and family allowance or offset losses from other years. It also skips one nuance: selling a debt token produces investment income, not a capital gain (Art. 25.2). The tax comes out the same because both share the scale, but loss offsetting works differently.

Frequently asked questions

How are security tokens taxed under Spanish IRPF?

According to the income they generate. Dividends and interest or coupons are investment income (Art. 25.1 and 25.2 of the IRPF Law); selling a share token produces a capital gain or loss (Arts. 33 and 34), and selling a debt token produces investment income (Art. 25.2). All of it goes to the savings base (Art. 46).

What rates apply to the savings base?

Since January 1, 2025: 19% up to €6,000, 21% from €6,000 to €50,000, 23% from €50,000 to €200,000, 27% from €200,000 to €300,000 and 30% above that. It is the sum of the state scale (Art. 66) and the regional scale (Art. 76), half each, as worded by Law 7/2024. The consolidated text in the BOE, checked on October 14, 2026, keeps that scale.

What happens if I sell a security token at a loss?

You pay no tax on that sale. For a share token, the capital loss first offsets capital gains from the same year; any negative balance left offsets up to 25% of the positive balance of investment income, and the rest carries forward over the next four years (Art. 49 of the IRPF Law). For a debt token, the result is negative investment income (Art. 25.2): it first offsets that kind of income and then up to 25% of the positive balance of capital gains. In both cases, if you acquire homogeneous securities within two months before or after the sale (one year, for capital losses on securities not admitted to trading), the loss is only recognized when you sell those securities (Arts. 25.2.b and 33.5.f and g).
