# Side Chain

GLOSSARY · BLOCKCHAIN & WEB3

Independent blockchain that connects to the main chain to increase scalability or add functions.

WHAT IS IT? · FOR DUMMIES

A **side chain** is like a secondary road that runs next to a main highway. It allows you to do things faster, cheaply and without traffic. Then, when you're done, you can go back to the highway (the main blockchain) with everything you did on the parallel one. It's a smart way to not clog up the main network and keep it lighter.

WHAT IS IT? · PRO

**Side Chain** It's a **independent blockchain, with its own consensus, rules and validators**, which is designed to operate in parallel to a **Mainnet** (main chain), such as Ethereum or Bitcoin, allowing **interoperability and asset transfer** between the two. Its objective is **decongest the main network**, process transactions more efficiently and enable new features without directly compromising the security or architecture of the original protocol.

Communication between a side chain and the main chain is usually enabled through **Bridges**, smart contracts and cryptographic proofs that allow you to “lock” assets on the main chain and “issue” equivalents on the side chain (or vice versa). Unlike Layer 2 solutions, which rely on mainnet security, side chains **do not inherit the security** of the main chain directly, which allows them greater technical flexibility but also involves **increased trust risks and attacks** if your validators aren't robust enough.

Prominent examples of side chains include **Polygon PoS**, **Gnosis Chain**, or **RSK** in the Bitcoin ecosystem. These networks allow you to run dApps, smart contracts and tokenized economies with **much lower commissions**, reduced confirmation times, and support for customized use cases (such as privacy, scalability, or alternative governance structures).

In short, side chains are a key strategy within the multichain architecture and scaling Web3, although they must be carefully evaluated in terms of security, decentralization and compatibility with the main ecosystem.

## 01 / Key points

- Independent blockchain that communicates with a main chain
- It has its own consensus and validation mechanism
- Facilitates faster and cheaper transactions
- Allows you to transfer assets between networks using bridges
- Doesn't directly inherit security from the main chain

## 02 / Advantages

- **Reducing costs and congestion** on the main network
- **Increased scalability** for DApps with high transaction volume
- **Technical flexibility** to test new models without modifying the mainnet
- **Support for custom functionality**: governance, privacy, native tokens
- **Interoperability between ecosystems** using bidirectional bridges

## 03 / Disadvantages

- **Security dependent on your own consent**, not the one on the Mainnet
- **Increased technical and operational complexity** for developers
- **Risks on bridges**, which may be vulnerable to attacks
- **Less decentralization** if they are managed by a small number of validators
- **Requires additional trust in the side chain infrastructure**
